The rare and stunning 12.03 carat Blue Moon diamond will be going on sale at a Sotheby’s jewelry auction this November. This internally flawless diamond could fetch $55 million when hit the auction block. “Blue for me is the most mysterious and magical of all diamond colors.” said Sotheby chairman David Bennett. “This gem will now take its place among the most famous gems in the world.”
The Blue Moon diamond was found in South Africa’s Cullinan Mine last year and has been shown around the world with onlookers admiring its radiance and shine, which some say is magical. The Cullinan mine is responsible for at least one fourth of the world’s diamond supply and is expected to produce around one million carats in the span of half a century.
Categorized as a fancy vivid blue diamond, the Blue Moon is the largest cushion-shaped stone in that category to ever appear at auction.
The record sale for a blue diamond so far came in November last year, when a 9.75 carats fetched $32.6 million at an auction in New York.
