RM Auctions sold 1967 Toyota 2000GT a few of weeks ago for stunning $1.2 million. Toyota, at the auction, beat, Ferraris, Porsches and become most expensive Toyota ever sold and most expensive Asian car ever.
In March 2011 2000GT fetched $650,000. These cars were expensive even when they were produced and it cost $7,230 which is equivalent to over $50,000 at current prices. It was more expensive than a Jaguar E-Type and Porsche 911.
RM Auctions claim that only 351 units were produced by Toyota between 1967 and 1970. The Toyota 2000GT is a limited-production, front-engine, rear-wheel drive, two-seat, hardtop coupé grand tourer designed by Toyota in collaboration with Yamaha. It was first displayed to the public at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1965. The 2000GT was manufactured under contract by Yamaha between 1967 and 1970. The 2000GT is seen as the first seriously collectible Japanese car and the first Japanese supercar.
The car has a dual overhead cam 2-liter in-line 6-cylinder engine and three Solex 2-barrel carburetors. Capable of producing 150 horsepower at 7,000 rpm, it reached top speed of 135 mph. Toyota had matched the powerful engine with a 5-speed manual overdrive transmission.
