Jewellery designer Yair Shimansky is set to unveil his unique creation at the FIFA World Cup 2010. Made from 6620 white and 2640 black round brilliant cut South African diamonds, giving a total weight of 3500 carats , the Shimansky soccer ball is weighing around 4.8 pounds and a value of $2.5 million. It is the size of a regular soccer ball.
This ball was not designed for any goal kicking practice, joked Yair Shimansky, when advising that the diamond encrusted ball weighs in at about 2,2 kilograms. It took about three months from conception of design to manufacture of the first crystal soccer ball, says Michele Meyer, Marketing manager for Shimansky.
Crystal replicas of the ball will be shown in their stores during the World Cup. Each replica will be auctioned with proceeds going to local charities. Aside from the ball, Shimansky has also created a 9.3 carat World Cup dome ring worth nearly $16,000 and a pair of silver commemorative World Cup cufflinks worth $129.
