Pininfarina may be best known for designing Ferraris – just about every one, in fact, for the past several decades – but the Italian design house has a growing portfolio that extends far beyond automobiles to include furniture, trains and much more. This, however, appears to be new territory for the coachbuilder.
Bovet Ottanta Tourbillon by Pininfarina
Bovet recently introduced the Pininfarnia Ottanta Tourbillon. At first glance, it appears that it is designed to be worn on your wrist like a traditional wristwatch, and it is. But it can also be flipped around, like a Reverso, allowing you to display either the caseback or dial side. That’s not it, though, it can also convert into a pocket watch. And if that is not enough, it even converts into a miniature clock. So, essentially, you get four watches for the one price.
All this can be accomplished easily and without the use of tools. A reverse hand-fitting carrying a single hand allows the hours, half-hours and quarter-hours to be read on the movement’s other face. Powered by the automatic Calibre Bovet 16BA01 movement, this timepiece is one breathtaking creation. What is more, to commemorate 80 years of Pininfarina, Dimier created the tourbillon to make one complete revolution in exactly 80 seconds.
The timepiece decorated in shades of gray along with the surface of its bridges featuring circular bipolar Clous de Paris decorative work, looks every bit stunning. The case is a version of the already famous Amadeo by Bovet, in titanium and steel completed with black DLC covering. Two other versions with a white or rose gold bezel and case-back are also available. Eight emblematic phrases each reflecting one decade of the brand’s existence and signed by Mr. Paolo Pininfarina himself have been engraved around the middle of the case. The dial has a brass flange with an anthracite color finish and a rock crystal lower plate revealing not only the movement but also the power reserve hand.
Only 80 Ottanta Tourbillon will be offered, in either DLC-coated steel and titanium or titanium with rose or white gold detail, with a price tag approaching $300,000.
