On August 19 a selection of rare pens will be auctioned by Bonhams in New York, headlined by some exquisite writing instruments from Dunhill-Namiki, especially the Dunhill-Namiki Lake Biwa maki-e fountain pen. Crafted using the finest Japanese lacquer techniques, the pen was created in 1930 through collaboration between Dunhill and Namiki. The pen is touted to fetch $15,000-30,000.
Also springing from the same iconic partnership you’ll find a Dunhill-Namiki Motorities Maki-e limited edition fountain pen. Detailed in gold dust and Raden pearl, the design incorporates wheels and flames in honour of Dunhill’s early 1900s ‘Dunhill Motorities’ automobile accessories. It comes with all its original packaging and papers, and carries an estimate of $20,000-30,000.
One more piece of art pen on sale is the third Krone Pink Stingray from limited edition of eight. Crafted out of original pink stingray cap and pink diamonds this sterling silver pen is estimated at $8,000-10,000.
Consisting of just over 400 lots, the sale also will include rare, limited editions pens by Montblanc and Loiminchay. A Montblanc Magical Black Widow skeleton limited edition in a black lacquered presentation box along with all original packaging and papers. The pen is expected to fetch $18,000-24,000; Montblanc 4th of July limited edition pen; Montblanc Teatro alla Scala limited edition fountain pen, among others.
Previews will take place at Bonhams’ New York from August 16th to August 18th. Highlights from the sale will also be on preview from August 14th to August 15th at the Washington DC Supershow (www.pencentral.com), the largest such show in the world.
