RM Auction Sports & Classics of Monterey
Monterey’s high-end collector-car auctions scored a number of huge multi-million sales, breaking price records and generally dismissing any notion of an ongoing economic recession. RM Auction’s Sports & Classics of Monterey sold an impressive 95 percent of its consignments in its three-day sale, racking up the highest overall results of the week at $67 million. Sixteen cars sold for more than $1 million, including the top-selling 1938 Talbot-Lago T150-C Lago Speciale with coachwork by Figoni et Falaschi and the 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Berlinetta, each hitting $4,620,000 (all prices include buyers premium).

Success on the auction block, accolades on the show field
Last Thursday, RM kicked off Sports & Classics of Monterey with a Ford-themed night featuring concept cars auctioned on behalf of the Ford Motor Company. A total of 18 modern concepts raised close to $1 million for charity, split between the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and The Children’s Center based in Michigan. RM Auctions was honored and delighted to have been chosen to assist Ford Motor Company with their long-time support of these great charities.
The next night brought more auction excitement as a rare 1948 Tucker 48 Sedan, selling for $1,127,500, set a new world record for a Tucker. An important 1964 Shelby Cobra USRRC Roadster also attracted spirited bidding to break the magic million-dollar mark. In addition, a 2008 Porsche 911 Carrera S Coupe sold for $110,000, with proceeds benefiting the Double H Ranch, a non-profit organization based in New York State that provides specialized programs and year-round support for children and their families dealing with life-threatening illnesses. Additionally, part of the sale proceeds from an automotive artwork that sold for $5,000 continued RM’s long-standing support of the Rotary Club of Monterey, supplementing RM’s annual donation.
Saturday night brought the main event, where 14 cars sold for over $1 million each. The top sellers were a 1938 Talbot-Lago T150-C Lago Speciale Teardrop Coupe and a 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Berlinetta; both sold for $4,620,000. The stunning 1949 Delahaye Type 175 S Roadster by Saoutchik achieved $3,300,000. The overall sell-through rate of the weekend was a solid 95%, and bidder registrations numbered well over 1,000 – a record number for any sale RM has ever held – and came from all corners of the globe.
On Sunday, the weekend was topped off by the fourth Best of Show win in ten years for RM Auto Restoration at the famed Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The winning entry was a gorgeous 1933 Delage D8S De Villars Roadster, owned by The Patterson Collection in Louisville, Kentucky. Other award-winning entries at the concours that passed through RM Auto Restoration’s doors included the 1929 Duesenberg Model J Dual Cowl Phaeton, owned by Charles Letts of Detroit, Michigan, and the 1934 Packard Sports Coupe, owned by Ralph and Adeline Marano of Westfield, New Jersey.
The weekend was exciting and memorable, with a packed house in the auction room and overall sales amounting to $67 million.
