2012 Mercedes Benz SLK – Magic Sky Control Roof
The roof of the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK has been teased, giving us a glimpse of the Magic Sky Control that could be contained within. For about €2,000 ($2,770), the smart roof can alter the transparency to suit the climate outside and the needs of the folks sitting inside. By using the plate condenser, the roof can be kept transparent or darkened at the touch of the button.
The top portion of the roof will normally be opaque, but with the push of a button an electric charge will change the glass to allow light to shine through. This roof system isn’t exactly new, but it is exciting to see it on a more reasonably priced vehicle. Furthermore, even in transport mode, the roof blocks UV and infrared light. Mercedes claims that the system gives the feeling of being outdoors when it’s too cold to put the roof down, while also allowing you to shade from the sun on very hot days.
The 2012 SLK is a little bigger than the car it replaces, and engine choices will include three petrols plus one diesel for the first time, using Mercedes’ 201bhp 2.1-litre four-cylinder oil burner. New Mercedes-Benz SLK is expected to debt at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show (March 3rd to 13th).
