NEW YORK, Nov. 29, 2010 /PRNewswire/ Swarovski shares the big screen with stars Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel and Winona Ryder in the upcoming psychological thriller, Black Swan. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, Black Swan takes a thrilling and haunting journey through the psyche of a young ballerina whose starring role as the Swan Queen turns out to be a part for which she becomes frighteningly perfect.
Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte created the Swan Lake ballet costumes for Black Swan and turned to their long time friend and supporter Swarovski, who donated nearly 250,000 crystals, weighing 40kgs for the ballet costumes, to add drama to the dark, romantic aesthetics of the pivotal ballet scenes. Rodarte worked with Swarovski crystals on the Black Swan and White Swan costumes as well as the diaphanous white gown worn by Natalie Portman’s character.
Swarovski was also integral to the look of the sets. Production designer Therese DePrez used 6 Swarovski chandeliers from the existing Schonbek collection to add sparkle and spectacle to the highly cinematic closing scene. The costume designer for the film was Amy Westcott.
“It is an honour for Swarovski to collaborate with Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte on the ballet costumes and production designer Therese DePrez on Black Swan. Swarovski crystal, renowned for its sparkling and alluring properties, is used to juxtapose the dark, dramatic costumes and sets which illustrate this chilling tale of a prima ballerina striving for perfection.” Nadja Swarovski, Vice President International Communications and Creative Director, Swarovski
