Mercedes-Benz GLC
Ever since BMW came out with its compact SUV X1 in the market, their country rival Mercedes-Benz started mulling over an idea of making its own baby SUV. Mercs’ appetite for controversial design shows no sign of abating, as this exclusive image of its new junior SUV, Mercedes-Benz GLC, clearly reveals.
According to Autocar, GLC set to go on sale in 2013, as a part of impressive range of new models set to hail from the German car maker’s flexible new MFA (modular front architecture) platform. The MFA platform is flexible as it can be used to engineer both front-wheel as well as all-wheel drive models. These models include the replacements for the current second-generation A-class and first-generation B-class, along with a new price-leading four-door coupe-like saloon that will be badged CLC and a station wagon (or estate) dubbed CLT.
Also on the anvil are a range of petrol and diesel engines ranging from a low cost 120 Bhp Renault Diesel to the top of the line 204 Bhp 250CDI engine variant with plenty of options in between. A six speed manual gearbox is to be standard on the lower variants while the top end versions might get a dual clutch transmission. As the GLC will be the new range of future Mercs, Mercedes will also consider hybrid powertrains and other forms of alternate fuels to spur growth and keep with the industry trend of moving to newer and efficient fuel technologies.
Along with the range of powertrain technology, the GLC will also come with some trick stuff like Brake Energy Regeneration and an automatic stop start system in a further bid to make the GLC a very frugal car. Now that makes quite a lot of sense given the way the fuel prices are hurtling towards the stratosphere.
The Benz GLC will be likely designed at the Sindelfingen studio in Germany. The GLC will get its design cues from the bigger model, the GLK Sports Utility Vehicle. Expect the exterior to be similar to the BlueZero concept car that Mercedes-Benz showcased at the 2009 North American International Show in Detroit. The new signature grille of Mercedes-Benz, angular headlights, prominent wheel arches, raised waist line and coupe-like rear end are the other designs to be used in the upcoming GLC.
