La Victoire de Samothrace, incredible glass sculpture inspired by the famous french artist Yves Klein is up for sale at Harrod’s Department store. After his death, Yves Klein became famous for being one of France’s most expensive artists despite the fact that financial success eluded him in life. Crafted into a 19½in blue crystal variant, the La Victoire de Samothrace is tempting for all art lovers.
La Victoire de Samothrace is a blue crystal version which is a replica of an relic that Klein obtained in the Louvre museum’s shop in 1960 with the aim of making a number of carvings from its mold. He wanted to use the trademark IKB (International Klein Blue) pigment.
Although not actually made by Yves Klein, the incredible sculpture is a faithful reinterpretation of his work that is both a celebration of his style and a tribute to his legacy. Klein’s widow is married to Daniel Moquay, the president of the Yves Klein Foundation who has approved the new version, to be made by Lalique’s craftsmen in an edition of 83, and priced at £75,000 ($121.500).
The estimation of the original piece was somewhere between $70,000-90,000 and sold at $85,000. Considering that the new version made by Lalique’s craftsmen is not a copy but reinterpretation, should not surprise me the difference in price. The first, original version was $85.000 and the following is $121.500, so I still wonder?
