Liz Taylor was a symbol of beauty and elegance, and from the first day of appearances on the screen, she took a place in the hearts of many of us! During her life Liz enjoyed all the blessings that were offered to her, so she deserved same after death.
After the sad passing of Elizabeth Taylor Wednesday (March 23), the Dame was laid to rest yesterday afternoon (March 24) in a private Jewish ceremony conducted by Rabbi Jerry Cutler, at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in California, buried in a traditional Jewish casket. According to a report from TMZ, the family wanted nothing but the finest for Liz Taylor. And that did in fact include an $11,000 casket.
The casket was made of solid mahogany wood, lined in red velvet with a matching pillow. What a coincidence, since she starred in the critically acclaimed 1944 movie National Velvet when she was just 12 years old. Traditional Jewish casket means there are no nails involved in its creation whatsoever. Instead a special glue is used to fuse the portions of the casket together.
Before she passed, Elizabeth requested that her ceremony be delayed by 15 minutes so she could be “late to her own funeral”. Before she was buried at The Great Mausoleum, the same place where Michael Jackson lays, Elizabeth’s casket was covered in gardenias, violets and lily of the valley.
Next to the Rabbi Jerry Cutler who led the ceremony, at the request of Elizabeth’s family and actor Colin Farrell performed a reading of Gerard Manley Hopkins’ poem ‘The Leaden Echo and the Golden Echo’. Other attendants included Elizabeth’s four children and ten grandchildren, as it was reserved for family and close friends only.
The public memorial is said to take place in the next few weeks, the reason why the burial was so sudden is Jewish customs require the burial to take place within 24 hours after the death.
