Charlie Chaplin’s 1929 Pierce-Arrow Dual Cowl Phaeton
Charlie Chaplin was a legend of silent film and comedy, who has lured everyone smiles. And now a 1929 Pierce-Arrow owned by the Hollywood icon is currently for sale on eBay. The bidding ends on May 15, with the current bid sitting at $88,100.
The dual-cowl phaeton convertible is one of the most luxurious and ostentatious cars of the era, making it the choice of many of America’s pre-depression elite. Its straight-8 engine was one of the smoothest and most powerful at the time, and a separate compartment for the rear passengers meant they didn’t have to associate with the riff raff in the driver’s seat, even when the top was down. By the 1920s, Chaplin was the most famous entertainer in the world, and his earnings were over $600,000 a year. He bought the car at the beginning of the Great Depression. Priced from $2,800 to over $8,000, the Pierce-Arrow was one of the highly sought after vehicles of that time by Hollywood stars, corporate tycoons and royalty.
The car had been part of the collection of the Automotive Road of Dreams Museum, until the Costa Mesa, California attraction closed in 2005, and has been in storage ever since. It is one of several cars from the collection currently being offered on the online auction website.
This is truly a unique chance for all fans of Charlie Chaplin and car collectors to own a car that once belonged to this Hollywood legend.
