Audio Power Labs 833TNT Monoblock Amplifier
Audio Power Labs’ first, and so far only, product is the 833TNT Monoblock Aplifier. Revealed at the 2011 CES, this amp delivers 200 Watts RMS (75 db SNR, THD of 1% at full power) using a completely analog, transformer coupled audio path.
This amp is named after the its 833C output tubes, which were developed in the 1940s specifically for audio applications and used extensively in AM radio transmitters. Tube amps are seen as the crème de la crème by many audio buffs, favouring them for their naturally warmer tones. The 833TNT takes it a step further by configuring the tubes so that they provide maximum amplification with no distortion.
The class-A amplifier is based on a push-pull configuration, in which each output tube is connected to opposite ends of the output transformer’s primary coil. This is said to provide greater amplification compared with single-ended tube amps, in which one or more tubes are connected to one end of the transformer’s primary coil. To keep the tubes at a safe operating temperature, a microprocessor-controlled liquid-cooling system uses capillary action to circulate liquid from small hot regions to larger radiating areas and back again without the need for pumps.
Each 833TNT amplifier weighs 160 lbs and uses 833C output tubes, 6550 driver tubes, and 12BH7 pre-driver tubes. The price will be somewhere between $150,000–$170,000 per pair.
