Leona Helmsley and her dog Trouble
Trouble, one of the world’s richest dogs passed away at the age of 12. The Maltese became the luckiest dog in the world when her wealthy US hotelier Leona Helmsley died in 2007, leaving her a legacy of $12 million (a judge later knocked her inheritance to a mere $2 million). She actually passed away in December, but her death’s only now being reported.
Trouble had a fulfilling life and had been living in Florida ever since her owner died in 2007. She was looked after by Carl Lekic, the general manager of the Helmsley Sandcastle hotel in Sarasota. Helmsley, remembered as the Queen of Mean for her demanding ways, also instructed that her beloved Trouble be buried next to her in the Helmsley mausoleum in New York’s Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. But Trouble was cremated and her remains are being privately retained.
The dog faced several threats of being kidnapped and killed for its money. Had a personal bodyguard costing $100,000 a year, and received $8,000 in grooming a year.
And now, after Trouble’s death, what will happen with her inheritance of $12 million? It probably might be given to charity, or the family members might fight for it.
