Past weekend, one more world’s record was broken! This time it’s about world’s most expensive camera ever sold. At a WestLicht auction in Vienna, a rare copy of the Leica 0-series, from the year 1923, achieved an incredible price of €2.16 million ($2.8 million), and thus for the 5th time broke the record for the most expensive camera ever sold. The camera was purchased by an anonymous European buyer in an exciting bidding war between the room, phone and internet bidders.

This camera is one of the major rarities in camera history! Only 25 of these Leica 0-Series cameras were produced in 1923, two years before the start of series production, as test cameras. And, approximately 12 pieces have been preserved. The camera is in excellent and fully working condition, all parts including the paintwork are original, with the matching lens cover, the folding finder has been replaced by the later Galilean finder as usual.
At the WestLicht in November 2007, a similar Leica 0-series sold for €336,000 ($430,000), and in May 2011 one sold for €1.32 million ($1.9) million.
