An ultra-rare 1957 Ferrari 625 TRC Spider has become one of the world’s most valuable cars after it was sold at RM Auction’s Mocaco Sale for a staggering $6.4 million. The Spider, raced in California during the 1950s, was one of 22 classic Ferraris offered by RM Auctions in Monaco in a two-day weekend event.

Bearing chassis number 0680 MDTR, the 320-horsepower race car is one of only two ever built by Ferrari and came with all the documents to prove its authenticity. It was originally bought new by famed racing driver and pioneering American Ferrari importer John von Neumann and has enjoyed single ownership in California for over 30 years. The incredible-sounding and rust-free Ferrari 625 TRC sports a 235kW 3.0-litre V12 engine with six Weber twin-choke carburettors, four-speed manual gearbox and four-wheel aluminium drum brakes with upgraded carbonfibre brake-shoe liners.
Of course the TRC Spider wasn’t the only car sold at the event, which brought in an astonishing $43 million in sales on 87 percent of all lots sold.
The next most expensive item was another classic Ferrari, a 1966 Ferrari 206 S Dino Spyder by Carrozzeria Sports Cars. It is one of just 18 examples ever built and comes with full Ferrari Classiche certification. Dubbed the Dino 206 S, the car was powered by the development of the 65 degree V-6 engine that had been conceived by Dino Ferrari, prior to his death in June 1956. It sold for just over $3.2 million. A Ferrari F1 racecar driven by Michael Schumacher to the 2000 World Championship grabbed $1.03 million.
While the sale price of the Ferrari 625 TRC Spider seems impressive, a 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa sold for $12.27 million back in 2009 and in 2010 BBC radio personality and Ferrari collector Chris Evans secured a 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO for a reported $20.1 million.
The two-day RM Auctions event saw a collection of more than 90 cars, 100 Ducati motorbikes and even three boats go under the hammer, including a 2007 Peugeot 908 V12 HDi FAP Le Mans car, a 2011 Lamborghini Gallardo LP600 GT3 racecar and a 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Sport Cabriolet A.
