Sperone Golf Course, South Corsica, one of the Europe’s most unique designs and one of the world’s most varied and most stunning golf courses has been put up for sale by its main shareholder, French businessman Georges Dewez with an asking price of €20 million ($25 million)!
The 80 hectares property includes clubhouse, restaurant and of course the 18-hole golf course. Measuring 6,106 metres from the back tees, with the layout up and down in the extreme, Sperone Golf Course is the only course with the 18-hole on Corsica. Located in a residential area larger luxury villas to rustic stone and wood beams, which are not for sale, Sperone Golf Course is very popular as place for vacation among many French celebrities. Opened in 1991, routed across most intriguing and beautiful parcel of golfing land in hilly facing Sardinia, this golf course annually hosts 20,000 fans around the world.
The owners of the villas Sperone have expressed interest in buying the golf course, but at a lower price. Jean-Charles Orsucci, the mayor of nearby Bonifacio, said the council would prefer the course to remain in local hands, hoping that the owners and Georges Dewez reach an agreement.
“The golf course plays an important economic role in the life of the commune and we’ll follow the sale with a particular interest. Our preference would be for the current co-owners to reach an agreement. We don’t want Sperone to fall into the hands of a foreign group which would be difficult to identify,” he said.
The history of Sperone was also up and down in the extreme. Dewez’s father, Jacques, bought the land in the 1960s to 1 franc per square meter before the convert, to the chagrin of environmentalists and Corsican nationalists. Despite their beliefs that enviroment should have been left untouched, Jacques Dewez created this course with magnificent views of the Mediterranean, for unforgettable golfing experience.
