Founded in 1881, Bunnahabhain Distillery is nestled in a spectacular setting on the curve of a remote bay on the North East coast of Islay. Taking its name from the Gaelic word meaning “mouth of the river”, the distillery uses the water from the Margadale Spring which filters through the limestone hills retaining a crisp clean purity which resulting in the only non-peated Islay malt, by which Bunnahabhain Distillery is renowned.
Bunnahabhain has announced that it will release a one-off rare single malt that lain hidden for at least four decades at the Islay distillery. 40 YO Islay Single Malt was discovered by Master Distiller Ian MacMillan, who found the casks listed in the distillery ledgers. He actually recognised the significance of the discovery after finding Turney casks, which were filled with the Bunnahabhain malt over 40 years ago by eminent Glasgow wine merchants, J G Turney.
“It was an exhilarating moment to stumble on such a special find,” he said. “There are very few 40yo Islays and unlike any other, Bunnahabhain’s taste is considered unique because the distillery does not heavily peat the fine malted barley.”
Only 750 bottles of the rare whisky will be released, all individually numbered and hand signed. Priced at at $3,195, Bunnahabhain 40 YO Islay Single Malt will be presented in a bespoke oak gift box containing a secret compartment that reveals hidden designs replicating the ‘Journey of Discovery’.
