Mercedes-Benz has finally revealed its SLS AMG Black Series, the latest member to the Black Series family. The German automaker released all details after an initial teaser release on its Facebook page few days ago, while its official debut will be at the Los Angeles Motor Show 2012 in two weeks time. An “extreme performance” version of the SLS GT3 race car, new 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series is the fifth Black Series model to come from Mercedes-AMG, and will go on sale in the U.S. next summer.
Based on its “AMG Lightweight Performance” strategy, Mercedes-Benz has designed the SLS AMG Black shed’s nearly 155 pounds off its predecessor, the SLS AMG, giving it an impressive power/weight ratio of 5.49 lb/hp. Weight loss efforts include a new 28.7 pounds lighter titanium exhaust system, and a massive spread of carbon fibre reinforced plastic components have replaced original parts including ood, underbody braces, torque tube and the panel behind the bucket seats. There’s also a new crankshaft bearings, upgraded oil bores and a new oil pump, and a revised water and oil cooling system.

Boasting numerous lightweight components and fascinating dynamics, our fifth Black Series model guarantees pure, unadulterated ‘Driving Performance.’ The SLS AMG Black Series is the ultimate choice for fast laps and a highly emotional experience,” says Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series comes equipped with the 6.2 liter V8 engine offering a performance 635hp and 635Nm of maximum torque. Its redline has been moved from 7,200rpm to 8,000rpm. Thanks to the extra performance and faster gear shift times the Black Series goes from zero to 100km/h in 3.6 seconds, and the top speed is 315km/h.
Inspired by its GT3 racecar, styling of the SLS AMG Black Series also boasts several enhanced features, such as the front chin spoiler, forged alloy wheels and carbon ceramic brakes, which is also applied to the interior of the Black Series with a sport steering wheel that features a red 12 o’clock marking and plenty of exposed carbon fiber.
