Since March 1999, the Château de Fombrauge (Castle Fombrauge), seventeen century monastery and its famous wines are in the ownership of Bernard Magrez, who is the owner of many wine estates throughout the world. In September 2012 the castle reached the pinnacle of the hierarchy of the Saint Emilion appellation and officially became Grand Cru Classé. Now to celebrate its new status, the company launches a limited edition of its 2008 Magnum housed in an original Stradivarius violin case.
The Château de Fombrauge also prides itself on hosting artists and musicians in residency. A patronage insisted upon by Bernard Magrez to contribute to the discovery of rising stars. The estate also acquired a very rare Stradivarius violin, only 500 of which remain throughout the world. So, Bernard Magrez, who describes himself as “a composer of rare wines” made a decision to offer this special edition limited to only five cases dating from the late 18th century which were adapted to perfectly hold the bottles.
A layer of oak-leaf plating has been added to parts of the cases, and the existing gold details have received an extra layer of 23-carat gold. The bottle itself comes nestled in vintage velvet that has been re-purposed from costumes used for the Venice Carnival. This five numbered cases are available for €9,900 ($12,578) each, at Château de Fombrauge, which overlooks France’s Dordogne valley.
