L’Or de Jean Martell (the Gold of Jean Martell) is the epitome of Martell’s 300 year quest for perfection, the culmination of Martell’s unique style. An outstanding blend of over 400 eaux-de-vie, some of them aged for over a century like hidden treasures deep inside the Martell cellars. The House of Martell, the oldest of the big cognac houses, has called French interior architect and designer Eric Gizar to design a special edition gift box of this most beautiful gem in its collection.
Inspired by cabinets of curiosities where collectors store precious, almost magical objects in Renaissance Europe, and silver cloches from great restaurants, Eric Gizard has designed a special luxury gift box called the “Dôme”. In order to emphasize a unique character of the L’OR de Jean Martell, that is owed to the aged eaux-de-vie from Borderies, Cognac’s most exclusive growth and hallmark of Martell, young designer choose a mirror placed behind the bottle, while the bottle itself was set on elegant pedestal. The base of the container includes a hidden book that emerges with a single push.
“I love the contrasts between rough and smooth, matt and shiny surfaces. The fine-grain leather that feels smooth against your skin, the outline that the stitching creates, the metallic lustre of a lid which sits perfectly enshrined within its container… “, Gizard described the material that he used.
Gizard sought to make a ritual out of serving the cognac, by presenting it under a leather Dome, which itself is sheathed in a delicate cover of thermoformed fabric. “I love this slow, gradual discovery of a well-hidden secret,” he explained in interview.
And that well-hidden secret is copper-golden L’OR de Jean Martell Cognac with strong and rich, some dark fruits scent, while the taste on the palate is round and well balanced, clear hints of hazelnut, a great final finish.
