It is a beautiful oasis. This enclave of suites surrounded by tropical gardens was recently rebranded from the Tides to Viceroy Riviera Maya, but its laid-back boho spirit remains the same. This 41-villa seaside refuge will knock your socks off in the most unexpected ways. Located just outside of Playa del Carmen on the Caribbean Sea’s Maya coast, Viceroy Riviera Maya delivers the beach, ocean and tropical breezes, and so much more.
On a long, sandy beach facing the Caribbean, the property is a short cab ride from the hustle of nearby Playa del Carmen, as well as the Riviera Maya’s many natural attractions. The ample guestrooms are decorated in textured, natural materials and in muted colors that mimic the jungle and beach around you.
The service is simply amazing. The staff will take care of every need or desire you could possibly imagine. Sumptuous palapa villas with private plunge pools and outdoor “moon bath” showers in their palm-shaded gardens have virtually every imaginable comfort, from silky-soft sheets on great, canopy-draped king beds to artisan soap hand-cut by your butler.
The resort makes the most of its setting at the edge of the jungle, greeting guests with a copal-smoke blessing performed by a Maya shaman, but the winding paths through deep greenery and the appearance of the occasional monkey may not be for everyone. Junglephobes can also, of course, just stick to the pool, out of the woods and steps from the well-equipped beach.
Meals at the two restaurants are exceptionally fine, especially at the more formal La Marea. The resort has a ‘dine-anywhere-anytime’ policy and guests are free to enjoy a unique meal in fabulous locations including the pier deck, the white-sand beach or poolside. Mind and body are in for a real treat with yoga classes and a full service spa, complete with treatments sourced from native herbs.
