The Bavarian manufacturer intends to offer a model that will be rival to the Audi R8, the BMW M8 which will go into production in 2016. BMW did not have car like this since 1981 when he sold the last of a total of 453 copies of legendary M1. The spiritual successor to the M1 is going to have some retro details, but also the latest, modern technology of BMW.
Construction and body will be made of lightweight materials, such as aluminum, carbon fiber, magnesium and even titanium, which is used in the aerospace industry, with the aim of limiting the total vehicle weight of 1250 kg.
BMW’s intention to offer supercar interpreted as a desire to publicly highlight the sporty brand image, damaged somewhere with presentation of vehicles such as electric or hybrid models, the i3 and i8, or MPV Concept Active Tourer. Car such as M8 will preserved the reputation of BMW as a manufacturer of sports and racing cars.
It is expected that future M8 will be placed on the platform of hybrid i8 coupe, while the engine will be improved 4.4-liter TwinPower turbo petrol, with direct injection, which is used in the BMW M5. German manufacturer’s engineers plan to enhance the existing unit at 600-650 hp, and the engine would be connected with eight-shift automatic transmission with double clutch.
M8 is designed for the primacy on the market, and to compete with models such as the Audi R8, Mercedes SLS AMG, or the recently introduced Porsche 911 Turbo.
The development of the new BMW supercar, strongly supports the head of the sports ‘M’ class, Friedrich Nitschke. If BMW M8 definitely gets the green light, the car can be expected in showrooms 2016. The M8 will reportedly be one of the most expensive cars ever to be manufactured by BMW and will cost around $326,000.
