A rare, 75 year old copy of the first Superman comic book, which was found in the wall of a house in Minnesota has been sold at auction for $175,000. The identity of the customer, from online auction that ended on Tuesday, was not published. In the comic book “Action Comics” from June in 1938 first appeared character created by writer Jerry Siegel and illustrator by Joe Shuster.
It was estimated that the comic book will be sold for about $100,000 since remained preserved only 100 copies of the original circulation of 250,000 copies. “This is important because it is a historical turning point. Till then there was a comic book superhero or costumed man,” told to Reuters CEO Steven Fischler Comicconnect.com site.
Action Comics No.1 was sold by entrepreneur David Gonzales who found it among the papers that are insulation installed in the walls of houses in Hoffman, Minnesota about 240 miles northwest of Minneapolis. Gonzales is an abandoned house from 1938 bought for $10.100.
Conditions of comics has been estimated at 1.5 out of a possible 10 points, since the last page torn by accident shortly after the comic was found. “This is a rip of $50,000 and possibly more,” said Fischler. Perfectly preserved “Action Comics” No. 1 is worth about $3 million. Almost perfectly preserved copies of the comic book was sold in 2011 for $2.16 million.
