Obsessed with celebrity, consumer culture, and mechanical (re)production, Pop artist Andy Warhol created some of the most iconic images of the 20th century. He drew inspiration widely from popular culture and everyday subject matter and coined the widely used expression “15 minutes of fame”. Andy loved women and the power of the feminine, and the women he loved most and best were Marilyn, Jackie, and Liz. Many of the paintings made in his heyday, between 1962 and 1965, were of them.
One of his painting of Elizabeth Taylor will be offered offered on sale as part of Sotheby’s fall auction season. Liz #1 (Early Colored Liz), executed in 1963 could fetch $20 to $30 million at the Contemporary Art Evening sale on 13 November in New York. The work is one of 13 paintings of Elizabeth Taylor made by Warhol that have been acclaimed for depicting the late actress’s roller coaster life.
His large-scale Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster) also could fetch $60 million at the same Evening sale.
Warhol’s Portrait of Elizabeth Taylor Liz#5, fetched $26,962,500 on the Phillips de Pury’s Contemporary Art Part I sale.
