John Martin Tracy (1843-1893) was likely the first prominent artist who depicted pointing dogs and scenes of upland bird hunting and field trials in American. One of his masterpieces – Haunt of the woodcock: Sensation and Bang Bang is now the highlight at the annual Dogs in Show & Field Sale which will take place at Bonhams Madison Avenue galleries, on 12th February 2014.
The painting from 1886, estimated to fetch $100,000-$150,000, depicts two of the most famous Pointers in American breeding history – Sensation and Bang Bang. This depiction of Sensation ‘in point’ has been the basis of the logo of the Westminster Kennel Club of Manhattan from 1877 to the present day.
