Alberto Giacometti’s Grande Tête Mince sold for more than it’s top end valuation of $50million at Sotheby’s Impressionist and Modern evening sale. This bronze sculpture reached $50,005,000, which is actually 138 times above it’s weight in gold. The 25 1/2 inch artwork is a sculpt of Alberto’s brother Diego created in a style unique to Giacometti. The narrow figures are characteristic of a lot of his work. Although detail is very much abstracted some family resemblance can be seen between Grande tête mince and the etching above.
“To me sculpture is not an object of beauty but a way for me to try to understand a bit better what I see in a given head, to understand a bit better what appeals to me about it and what I admire in it,” Giacometti explained.
Sotheby’s sale of Impressionist & Modern Art, held on 6th November 2013 in New York achieved an impressive and market-reassuring $290,244,000.
