Have you ever dreamed of sleeping under the sea. Now, your dream can come true, since the Manta Resort on Pemba Island, Zanzibar, has unveiled a room with a unique view with the opening of Africa’s first underwater hotel room. This unique room is located some 13ft (four metres) beneath the surface of the Indian Ocean and it functions as a miniature private island. This floating structure, designed by Sweden’s Genberg Underwater Hotels AB, provides three levels – those above the water clad in local hardwood, and each an experience in itself.

The landing deck at sea level includes a lounge and bathroom; accessed by ladder, the roof is a sunbathing terrace during the day and a stargazing spot at night. Then there’s the underwater bedroom – and the magical feeling of lying on a soft double bed surrounded by panes of glass affording almost 360 degrees viewing. By night, the underwater spotlights beneath each window around the room attract the shyer and more unusual, for instance squids and octopus.
For those looking for a more traditional stay, the Manta Resort also offers stunning seafront villas, superior garden rooms and garden rooms.
However, sleeping with the fishes and other sea creatures doesn’t come cheap, with prices for the suite starting from $750 per person, per night.
