The home in Liverpool where John Lennon spent his early childhood reached an impressive £480,000 ($772,114) in a property auction held on October 29. This rare piece of music history was bought by an American Beatles fan, making a 220% increase on its £150,000 guide price. The music legend lived at 9, Newcastle Road in Wavertree, Liverpool, with his parents until he was five years old. The red-brick, three-bedroom terraced property, which is only a few streets away from Penny Lane is rumoured to have been where Lennon wrote The One After 909, the opening track of the Beatles‘ final studio album, Let It Be.
However, Lennon spent his early years in the Newcastle Road house before being sent to live with his aunt and uncle, Mimi and George Smith at Mendips, in Liverpool’s busy Menlove Avenue, where he stayed until 1963. Since than the Wavertree house has changed hands only a few times. The structure of the house remains the same as when Lennon grew up there in the 1940s such as the original Victorian sash windows.
Stephen Giddins, Regional Sales Director of realtors Entwistle Green, declared himself “delighted” with the result. “We were consciously aware that there was a lot of interest in the property and we wanted to ensure that this translated into achieving the best price possible for them.”
