About 3 miles off the coast of Key Biscayne in Miami, Florida, you’ll find the place where life after life exists in the depths of the ocean. Neptune Memorial Reef is the largest man-made reef ever conceived covering over 65,000 square-meters of ocean floor, at a depth of 40 feet. This lost city is part of a Neptune Society sponsored underwater cemetery, and is the world’s first cemetery of its kind, where people can take the remains of a loved one. Cremated remains are cast into concrete memorials and placed within the city, with a copper and bronze plaque installed next to the structure.
The project was initially supposed to be simply a replica of “the Lost City of Atlantis”, but when complete, will have transformed over 16 acres of barren ocean floor and 125,000 burials. Already the reef has started to resemble the Lost City with bronze statues of lions, majestic columns and sculptures of shells and starfish. There will be underwater roads leading to a central feature with benches and statuary. Family members can visit a city of the dead by boat, snorkel or scuba tank.
