A fine and important Elsa Schiaparelli couture Zodiac Jacket sold for £132,000 ($215,900) at Kerry Taylor Auctions. Covered in a galaxy of shooting stars, planets and signs of the zodiac embroidered by Maison Lesage, the jacket is piece from Elsa Schiaparelli’s Astrology Winter 1938/39 collection. The midnight blue piece is edged in rhinestones and sprinkled with minuscule glass beads as stardust, and gorgeous gold thread. It also features Elsa Schiaparelli’s trademark design of the “Big Dipper”, which was her good luck emblem. She got this nickname from astronomer, Giovanni Schiaparelli, the designer’s uncle when he noted that she had a penchant for astronomy and astrology.
According to London based Kerry Taylor Auction House, this jacket is one of the most beautiful couture items they have ever had the privilege to handle.
Schiaparelli’s collection of clothing, furniture and decorative arts objects — including more pieces from the Astrology collection will be offered at Christie’s sale in Paris, on January 23.
