Sweden is home to hundreds of castles – from burned-out fortresses to grand Royal palaces. Some of them now run as hotels, some are open for the public to enjoy and attract throngs of visitors with tales about their history, owners or purpose. One of the Swedish foremost examples of Baroque design – Ållonö castle has been listed on sale for SEK 39 million ($6 million).
Built in the late 1670s by Baron Gustaf Kurck, following drawings by the famed court architect Nicodemus Tessin, Ållonö Castle became one of the most well-known private castle in Sweden after being featured in the reality TV show, Swedish Millionaires (Svenska miljonärer). It has been owned by many famous families; including Kurck, Lilliehöök, Oxenstierna, Ekeblad, Hamilton, Sperling & Flach. Flach family returned the castle to its original condition during the years 1905-1913. In 2008, multimilionaire Andres Sydborg, who made a fortune selling scrap, bought the castle and splendidly restored it, adding a motocross track and helipad to the castle’s expansive grounds.
