In a land of myth and legend, on an island where fire meets ice, in a spectacularly surreal landscape of moss-covered lava fields, geysers and steaming rivers, by Thingvellir National Park comes ION hotel. The hotel labeled itself as “Iceland’s first adventure hotel“. Nestled amidst the diverse Icelandic landscapes in the heart of the Mt. Hengill region, ION opened its doors in February 2013 and was built with the environment in mind. Panoramic windows, stark concrete, wooden walls and minimalist furniture are complemented by soft sheepskin-covered chairs, fluffy cushions, large candles and fireplaces, creating a contemporary-cool yet distinctly cosy Nordic vibe.
The hotel features 45 guest rooms, panoramic restaurant and bar, corporate and private event facilities, spa and heated outdoor pool overlooking the surrounding lava fields. The Northern Lights Bar is a highlight of the hotel, featuring double height windows and sweeping views over the landscape and starry night sky.
Local hot springs provide the hotel with geothermal energy and hot water, local wood such as driftwood was used to furnish most of the building’s interior and all of the beds, lounges and chairs were built from recycled materials. Corrugated cardboard was used to make many of the hotel’s lamp shades and recycled rubber was used for the restroom basins.
When talking adventures, which is the main point of the hotel you can can go snorkeling between two tectonic plates, specifically the ones separating America from Eurasia, or experience specialized Jeep tours, white water rafting and fishing. Also, guests can access local hiking trails, hot springs, horseback riding, snowmobiling and glacier walks.
