This earliest Superman cover art known to exist will be offered at Heritage Auctions‘ Feb. 20-22 Vintage Comics Signature Auction in New York. Coming from Fred Guardineer’s thrilling visage of the Man of Steel from Action Comics #15, it could bring more than $200,000. “Guardineer’s cover is the earliest Superman cover art in existence,” said Ed Jaster, Senior Vice President at Heritage. “It is a blockbuster piece of early American comic art history and a fitting companion to the landmark finds in this auction.”
Also up for grabs in this sale are two Silver Age milestones:Amazing Fantasy #15 — the first appearance of Spider-Man — in 9.0 grade by CGC, and the original cover art to Tales of Suspense #84 by Jack Kirby and Frank Giacoia.
Among nearly 1,200 lots, collectors from around the world can find a 9.4 grade CGC NM copy of Tales of Suspense #39, the first appearance of Iron Man or the finest known copy of Amazing Man Comics #5 (#1), or the original cover art by John Buscema and George Roussos for The Avengers #42 to name just a few.
