Everything is on sale. Even the church! Yes, one church in Slovenia, in the capitol city Maribor goes under the hammer. Built in Maribor suburb Košaki, the church is new and unused and will be offered on sale at the auction, scheduled for May 9th, with the starting price of €1,7 million ($2,4 million). The reason of sale is one of the biggest financial scandals of the Catholic Church. In 90’s, Maribor’s archdiocese established company “Economic growth”, which was a founder of two Holding company Zvon 1 and Zvon 2, who worked as an investment fund.
They came in all possible jobs, even they were the owners of the telecommunications company T-2. They invested in Croatia, at Brac island they planned to build a large apartment complex, one was built in Opatija. But then came the financial crisis. It turned out then that both Holding companies raised loans that they could not repay, debts have piled up and reached €800 million.
Maribor’s Archbishop at that time, Franc Kramberger was dismissed and sent to a monastery in Austria, Zvon 1 and Zvon 2 went bankrupt so even the believers who gave donations to the church are deceived. However, now the church with 1,500 square meters is now on sale, and perhaps become a mall.
