The mining company “Petra Diamonds” announced, that they has unearthed in South Africa a “remarkable” blue diamond. The company said that a diamond of 122.52 carats was found in the mine Cullinan, east of Pretoria, where they in the past, extracted some of the world’s most famous diamonds, including those for the British royal treasury. The company “Petra Diamonds“, based in London, said that the blue diamond of this size are very rare, and that we can talk about the “really important discovery.”
The value of a diamond is not yet determined. From the same mine in January this year, also was extracted a blue diamond of 29.6 carats. Blue diamonds are the rarest gemstones in nature. Cullinan mine is considered a “major world source” of this gem. In 1905, it was taken out the biggest diamond in the world, the 3,106 carats called the “Cullinan,” which was later cuted into several pieces, two of which are on the British crown and scepter. Last year, a blue diamond of 5.30 carats, was sold at auction in London for 6.2 million pounds ($9.9Million), thus achieving a new world record price per carat.
