This could be the coolest hotel design ever. World’s first floating snowflake hotel will be based in the fjords near the Norwegian town of Tromso, which sits within the Arctic Circle – one of the best places to spot the glorious Northern Lights. Known as the Krystall hotel, the unusual property is being developed by company Dutch Docklands, which specialises in floating structures. It will feature 86 five-star hotel rooms, a spa and wellness centre and a conference centre, all designed to be completely self-supporting and self-sustainable.
Developers will tether the massive snowflake to the fjord’s floor, but will still be able to float between six and 10 feet either side of its centre. Architect Koen Olthuis by Waterstudio, working in tandem with Dutch Docklands, designed The Krystall with the environment in mind, so the hotel can be removed completely, if needed, without damaging the fjord.
Dutch Docklands is also planning to open another floating property in the Maldives, called Ocean Flower.
