Enormous Virginia estate of late heiress Rachel “Bunny” Mellon, who passed away at the age of 103 earlier this year – has been put up for sale by her estate executor for $70 million. Oak Spring Farm, the roughly 2,000-acre estate in Upperville, Va., about an hour from Washington., D.C., is selling for a whopping $35,000 per square feet. The estate has about 40 structures on it, including a roughly 10,000-square-foot Georgian mansion known as the “Brick House,” a pool house designed by architect I.M. Pei, a private mile-long airstrip and a working dairy.
The property also includes two stables (where Mellon bred racehorses), paddocks and barns and a collection of guest houses and staff accommodations, along with “extensive gardens and greenhouses and other outbuildings.” Not to forget the Kentucky Derby winner “Sea Hero” statue, one of Mr. Mellon’s thoroughbreds.
Mellon’s primary residence isn’t included in the sale; it will be given along with a 100-acre portion of the estate to the Gerard B. Lambert Foundation, a charitable entity established by Ms. Mellon in memory of her father.
