These days all roads lead to Hershey! Final countdown underway to RM Auctions’ two-day annual Hershey, Pennsylvania sale, which starts on Thursday, 9 October. Auction features boats, horse-drawn carriages, two collections from esteemed enthusiasts, and a number of other very rare vehicles. This event is held in conjunction with the AACA Eastern Fall Meet and here are some highlight of the sale. John Moir’s A-Z Collection is unique, as it the first collection we have heard of that consists of 26 motor cars of marques that span every letter of the alphabet.
When Mr. Moir’s late wife noted that he had cars that represented A, B, and C, she said, “Since you have those, you might as well finish the alphabet.” Mr. Moir’s love of unique vehicles is on full display at the Hershey auction, with well-known makes like Ford, Lancia, and Rolls-Royce sharing the spotlight with Brasier, Jowett, Orient, Unic, and Zebra.
Jeffrey Day’s collection may not have a Zoe or Zebra, but through years of completing renowned horse-drawn carriage restorations, his attention to detail and love of American classics helped expand his fleet with some of the most sought-after examples, including a 1957 Ford Thunderbird ‘F-Code’, a 1956 Ford Fairlane Crown Victoria Skyliner ‘Glass Top’, and an immaculate 1958 Chevrolet Bel Air Impala Sport Coupe.
For those who collect horse-drawn vehicles, a stunning 1860 Abbott-Downing Stagecoach should prove most desirable, with Day saying, “This is a larger coach than others, and it has rooftop seating. It is outfitted with its original lamps, pole, and leader bars, as well as its original strongbox inside.”
This 1930 Cadillac V-16 Roadster by Fleetwood has had two owners from new, with the last title change in 1933, and it has been a cherished member of the John Moir family for more than 80 years. I consider it to be one of the most special V-16 Roadsters to ever come to auction.
This car’s provenance is unrivalled, as it is complete with its original build sheet, documentation of its early life spent in Worcester, Massachusetts, in the care of the Whittall family, and numerous historic photographs. It features an older, authentic restoration and still presents beautifully in its original colors. Even without its compelling history, this particular car would be among the most desirable V-16 Roadsters available. To become just the third owner would truly be a special opportunity.
