Trend of adding gold to many things began to be applied to drinks, in this case to Serbian rakija (rakia). Dubbed Zlatija, this rakija is honey based plum brandy with the addition of 24 karat gold leaf. Worldwide it is believed that these spirits have magical properties and, according to experts and a lot of healing characteristics and treatment with gold has been known for a long time.
“This edible gold improves the circulatory system, immune system and even psychological disorders. In recent years, is used for the treatment of inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or psoriasis,”- said producer of Zlatije, Marija Jovičić.
Over the last few years Zlatija is mostly consumed as a substitute for champagne on special occasions.
