The original drawing of the famous Winnie the Pooh and his friends, was sold at auction in London for a record £314.500 ($493,500). EH Shepard’s ink drawing of the bear playing Poohsticks with Piglet and Christopher Robin broke the world record for any book illustration at Sotheby’s auction last night. The illustration, one of the most famous drawings for the book of all time, shows the trio standing on the bridge while watching the river.
In the story, Pooh has invented the game of throwing a stick on one side of the bridge and waiting to appear on the other. The famed drawing of three buddies was first published in AA Milne’s second book – “The House at Poog Corner” in 1928 and later was used for the front page of many children’s books.
A pencil drawing of the same scene sold at Sotheby’s last year for £58,750 ($92,200).
Other items for sale at the auction in London included classic children’s works by Beatrix Potter, Mike Margolis and Arthur Rackham.
