It was just matter of time when we’ll see the smart bottle. And, this innovative bottle doesn’t contain water, but more precious liquid – scotch. Johnnie Walker has developed a connected smart bottle capable of sending text messages to customers. Johnnie Walker Blue Label, is the first Diageo’s liquor to get the smart bottle treatment from Thin Film, which contains a sensor that can detect when a smartphone is nearby and send cocktail suggestions, advertisements, coupons, and reminders to stock up on more whisky.
This smart bottle works like this: a thin sensor tag sticks on the side of each bottle, which contains patent-pending OpenSense technology, allowing it to “communicate” with smartphones nearby using NFC (near field communication). It’s the latest application of NFC technology aimed at enhancing security and fighting fraud in the alcohol industry.
Thin Film Electronics claims that unlike static QR codes that are easy to copy and often difficult to read, OpenSense tags are permanently encoded at the point of manufacture and cannot be copied or electronically modified. OpenSense sensor tags can also detect if a bottle is sealed.
