Do you want to get married deep inside a glacier? You can do that very soon as the ice-tunnel in Langjökull glacier with a small chapel is set to open this summer. Construction of a five hundred metre (1,640 feet) long tunnel, located on the west side of Langjökull glacier in West Iceland, is 1,260 metres (4,134 feet) above sea level, and go 30 m (98 ft) under the ice cap at the deepest. This man-made ice tunnel will be the largest in Europe and among the largest in the world.
Ice Tunnel to Open in Glacier Langjökull This Summer
In addittion to a small chapel for those who would like to marry deep within an ice cap, the tunnel which will consist of numerous nooks and dens will house exhibitions and restaurants.
Sigurður Skarphéðinsson, who is heading the project, said that 25,000 to 30,000 tourists are expected to visit the tunnel this year.
The tunnel will be open eight months of the year and according to Sigurður they will be following movements in the glacier daily to ensure safety.
