2014 Marks & Spencer Macon-Villages has been named the best Chardonnay in the world at the Decanter World Wine Awards. British grocery’s bottle of wine received the award for best under £15 ($23 USD), having been judged by a panel of 240 judges, including world champion sommelier Gerard Basset. Costing £10 ($10), it is one of just 35 wines from almost 16,000 of the world’s best to receive an International Trophy in the awards.

Macon-Villages 2014 was blended for Marks & Spencer by winemaker Sue Daniels and Georges Brichon, of Cave de Prissé.
Described by Marks & Spencer as “a fresh and fruity white with a really appealing, lively scent of apples and lemons and a hint of ripe, rounded peach on the finish,” it is grown from 30-year old vines grown in limestone soils in Macon, Burgundy.
The Anthony Joseph Vidal Legacy Chardonnay 2012, from New Zealand won the award in the over £15 category, costing £39,20 ($60).
