The Jaquet Droz Singing Bird Scent Flask recently sold for $2,53 million at a Sotheby’s watch auction in New York. This breaks a new record for a Jaquet Droz antique piece. Conceptualised and created by Pierre Jaquet Droz and Leschot in 1786, decorated scent flask is adorned with enamel and countless jewels, encompassed an articulated bird just 12 millimetres tall. That ‘nightingale’ actually sings: a complex, miniature organ projects the bird’s melody in conjunction with its movement.

The pear-shaped case contains the white enamel dial: roman numerals and gold hands operating through the fusee of gilt brass movement. Below lies a revolving diamond balance on one face and the recessed richly endowed singing bird on a leafy branch against a translucent pink enamel background on the other.

With its borders lined with motifs of rubies and half pearls, bounded by gold paillon and with arabesques design – 16th century Europe style, it is certainly an astounding creation that amounts history throughout continents.
The automaton also includes grotesques and fruits lining the translucent blue background throughout the urn, with countless rubies, emeralds, sapphires and diamonds.
