Throughout his 40-plus years career, Manolo Blahnik had only one job – to create magnificent and sophisticated shoes. Now, for the first time, Blahnik, who is now 72 launches his first collection of clutches and handbags. Obviously, it’s never too late to try something new. He put his magic in a new category, making handbags some of the most desirable objects on the planet.
The collection consists of six clutch bags – all squared and egg-shaped. Each bejeweled clutche is inspired by Blahnik’s more ornamental shoes, looking pretty similar just bigger and shinier. Like the shoes, the bags are made in a rainbow of satin hues and fine crepe, embellished with encrusted Swarovski crystals, which are the focal point of the luxury designs.
“I am always inspired by beautiful women from the past and present, so when I thought about doing a collection of bags, I was sure they were going to be evening bags for the women of today,” he told us. “I love ornaments in my shoes so why not add these to the bags too? These bags are an extension of some of the shoe styles I really like as I wanted to keep the connection between the shoes and bags.”
The capsule collection of clutches will retail for $1,725 to $1,925, and will be available at Manolo Blahnik’s flagship stores in London and New York and at British department stores Liberty and Harrods.
