US scientists have developed a revolutionary bikini – partially printed on a 3D printer, this swimsuit helps in cleaning the sea from various pollution. Bikini – Sponge Suit, designed by the engineers at the University of California Riverside, removes oil and chemicals from seawater. Besides being environmentally efficient, this swimsuit is also very “trendy”. Partly printed on a 3D printer, is made of a special material called “sponge”.
“It is made on the basis of heated sucrose, and its porous structure has hydrophobic properties. This means that repels water, but is also able to absorb the harmful substances,” the researchers explain.
This super material isn’t harmful to the environment and very cost effective to produce. It absorbs everything except water, and can absorb up to 25 times its own weight, depending on the density of the material absorbed. These absorbed contaminants are released only by way of exposing the material to heat with a temperature of more than 1,000 degrees Celsius.
The scientists say that their bikini could efficiently reused up to 20 times without losing its absorbency. After that, the material would have to be replaced.
It remains unknown when will Sponge Suit find in stores, but its creators are sure it will be a hit and, most importantly, have a positive effect on the environment.
