Billionaire Joseph Lau from Hong Kong bought to his seven-year-old daughter famous 12.03 carat “Blue Moon” diamond and paid for it nearly $48.5 million! A rare blue diamond reached a record price at Sotheby’s auction in London. Head of auction David Bennett stated that this was the highest price per carat achieved by this diamond. Before the auction, it was estimated between 32.6 and 51 million euros.
The new owner immediately renamed “Blue Moon” diamond into “Blue Moon of Josephine“, after the name of his daughter.
The media report that billionaire from Hong Kong earned his fortune dealing with real estate, and last year was convicted of bribery and money laundering. He recently bought another gemstone to his daughter that costs millions of dollars.
Lau is the buyer of 16.8 carat “Pink Diamond” from Christie’s and he paid $28.5 million for it. That diamond was also renamed and is now called “Sweet Josephine”. Six years ago, Lau bought to his darling a 7.3 carat blue diamond – “Josephine’s Star”, paying a then-record $ 9.5 million.
A court in Macau, known as the “Asian Las Vegas”, condemned Lau to five years in prison on corruption charges. The sentence was not served because Macau and Hong Kong have no extradition treaty. According to “Forbes“, Lau’s fortune is estimated at $10.2 billion.
