With the Great Characters Editions, issued for the first time in 2009, Montblanc honors the great figures from history with their groundbreaking work. Handmade by master craftsmen and issued in a strictly limited edition, these exclusive writing instruments are a fascinating tribute to the legacies they left behind. This time Montblanc is celebrating artist Andy Warhol in their new Great Characters Edition pens.
Probably the most universally recognised of all Andy Warhol’s works is his Campbell’s Soup Cans series. As the inspiration behind the design of the Andy Warhol Special Edition, this iconic image appears in a grouping of 4 cans engraved into the stainless steel cap. Both cap and cone resemble soup can lids. Warhol’s masterful eye for colour informs the choice of cobalt blue for the precious resin barrel and orange for the narrow rings on the cone and forepart, while the squeegee he used in silkscreen printing is captured in the design of the clip.
In reference to his Dollar Signs series, a dollar sign is engraved on the handcrafted 585 gold nib. Warhol’s signature quote: “Art is what you can get away with.” is also engraved on the cap ring.
The fountain pen priced at $940 additionally boasts a handcrafted rhodium coated gold nib engraved with a dollar sign. The Roller Ball will set you back by $805 while the ballpoint pen retails at $750.
