Leica announced its first underwater camera, the Leica X-U. This newest product is specifically designed for extreme outdoor and underwater shooting. The X-U is perhaps best described as a rugged compact camera – rather than a true underwater camera – being depth rated to 49 feet, shock-resistant, freeze-resistant, and dust-sealed.
Inside the X-U is a large 16.5-megapixel APS-C sensor, and on the front of the camera is a bright Leica Summilux 23mm f/1.7 ASPH lens. The lens has a close minimum focus distance of just 8 inches.

The back of the camera is equipped with a 3-inch LCD screen that helps photographers frame and review photos, even when you’re underwater. The controls and menus have been tweaked in order to allow for more simple operation, including an Underwater Snapshot button that can be found easily when diving. You can enjoy shots captured at 5 fps thanks to a maximum ISO of 12,500. It also captures 1080p HD footage at 30 fps.
Leica X-U will begin shipping at the end of January 2016 with a retail price of $2,950.
